So You Need a New Cycling Bicycle?

There are lots of reasons to choose a bicycle as your primary means of transportation. Many of these reasons are not at all related with how you like to travel. Engaging in exercise is one of the overwhelming reasons that a large number of individuals choose to go cycling. Some people cycle as a competitive sport. And some people decide that they want to take up cycling as a hobby with their family and friends. When deciding to purchase a cycling bicycle, there will be a number of elements that need to be taken into account, and this is true for those wishing to enjoy cycling as a hobby, sport, or a means of getting from point A to point B. In order to assist you in your decision, we have put together a few tips.

One of the major parts of choosing the right cycling bicycle for you is making sure that the bicycle is the right size. To do this, you will need to measure your inseam. Simply measure through your inner leg from your groin to the bottom of your foot to find out your inseam. The goal is to be able to sit on the seat of the bike and still rest your feet flat on the ground. If you can do this you need not worry about stopping in an emergency if your brakes malfunction.

For a road bike you should take away 9" from the inseam measurement you took earlier. This is due to the type of tires you will be using for a road bike. Road bikes are meant for city cycling—the tires are thinner and work best on concrete paving. For a mountain bike you will need to take 12" away from your total inseam. The tires on a mountain bike are not the same as a road bike. These tires are designed to handle rocky and jagged terrain so are therefore thicker. Mountain bikes can travel on city pavement but that is not what they are designed to do.

You also need to acquire some safety gear. Bicycle helmets are something completely different than they once were. Not only do they look a little better now, they are also safer for you. You should never even think about riding the bike without first putting on your helmet. You don't read even realize how important this thing can be in saving your life.

You might also consider investing in elbow, knee, wrist and ankle guards—especially if you are going to be going “off road” on your bicycle. If you are going to be using your bicycle as your sole means of transportation, you should think of investing in some pants clips as well. Pants clips are designed to hold your pants in place so they don't get caught up in the chain or the gears of the bike.

When looking for a bike your main goal is to find one that suits you physically. That is the primary goal of anyone who chooses cycling as their primary form of transportation. Comfort and saftey are the two most important aspects of riding a bike.
